The Central Office of Information (COI) has created an official Twitter feed to provide users with updates and news from inside the government department.
The news comes as Hitwise UK found Twitter traffic has increased six-fold since the beginning of the year to be the 50th most visited site last week.
According to Hitwise, the site was more popular than the Daily Mail, RightMove, MSN UK Search, Directgov and all retail websites excluding Ebay, Amazon UK, Play.com and Argos last week.
The micro blogging site was also the 36th biggest source of traffic to other websites in the UK during March. The top downstream websites visited after Twitter were Twitpic, followed by Facebook, Google UK and YouTube.
