Over the past few months facebook have been refining their new
"Sponsored Stories" advertising programme, its latest innovation for running a social media campaign on the platform, which has seen advertisers reporting as much as a 46%
increase in click through when compared against running standard
facebook adverts according to an article on the social networking blog
Inside Facebook.
How does it work ?
Facebook have esentially reverted to the age old practice of
reccomending things to your friends (Remember that ?) However instead of you just reccomending a company or product to a friend your reccomendations or "likes" are then fed straight into the right hand column of your friends'
news feed further allowing for impressions and clicks. If your friend
was to like or interact with the fan page of a company or brand who have
opted in for sponsored stories you will then see a story about this in
your news feed giving you the option to like the brand yourself.
How does this differ from standard interactions ?
The majority of normal interactions with a fan page or brand are
normally fed into your friend's newsfeeds however sponsored stories
takes this one step further, instead posting the information into the
right hand column so that it stands apart from the usual activities on
facebook. Sponsored stories also has the advantage of posting
information not only about likes but also interactions such as page
posts and place check-ins making advertising in this way perfect for
businesses with a physical location.
