Unilever researches 'low-carbon' ice cream

Unilever is developing an ambient 'low-carbon' ice cream designed to be sold at room temperature to consumers who would then freeze it home.

The FMCG giant said the product would help the environment because keeping ice cream frozen is an energy-intensive process, according to a report in The Times.

Unilever, which owns the Magnum and Ben & Jerry's brands, is the world's largest ice-cream producer, with annual sales of £4.3bn a year globally.

The research behind the product is being undertaken in Unilever's laboratory in partnership with academics at Cambridge University.

The development of the low carbon ice cream is part of a wider review by Unilever to minimise the environmental impact of its brands.
