YouTube tests 3D videos (soon ads that make you jump out of your seat)

The Google-owned video sharing site is allowing a developer to work on the 'stereoscopic video player' initiative during the one day a week all employees are allocated to devote to personal projects.

On the YouTube Help forum, the Google staffer known only as Pete says: ‘I'm the developer working on the stereoscopic player as a 20 per cent project. It's currently very early, hence the silly bugs. Your feedback and suggestions are welcome, but as this isn't my primary project I can't promise a speedy turnaround with improvements.'

The 3D video project has yet to be officially sanctioned by Google, but the chances of it getting the go ahead are promising given that other initiatives to come out of ’20 per cent time’ include Gmail.

Google is working hard to beef up YouTube’s commercial offering in an effort to recoup the £970 million it paid for the video sharing site in 2006. It has already moved rolled out high-definition videos and click-to-buy ecommerce clips so 3D video ads are not beyond the realms of possibility.
